TMJ Therapy in Richmond

Jaw pain, clicking, tightness, or headaches that radiate from your temples can all point to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. Whether it's caused by stress, clenching, grinding, poor posture, or a past injury, our team gets to the root of what's driving your discomfort rather than just easing the symptoms.

What is TMJ Dysfunction?

The temporomandibular joint connects your jaw to your skull, and it's involved every time you speak, chew, or yawn. When the muscles and joint around it become overworked or misaligned, it can lead to:

  • Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning

  • Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening your mouth

  • Headaches or pain behind the eyes

  • Neck and shoulder tension

  • Limited or uneven jaw movement

  • Ringing in the ears or ear discomfort

Our Approach to TMJ Treatment

Our practitioners use a hands-on, whole-body approach to TMJ care. Rather than treating the jaw in isolation, we assess your neck, shoulders, and posture, since tension in these areas is often directly connected to jaw dysfunction.

Treatment may include:

  • Intraoral and extraoral release techniques to relax tight jaw muscles

  • Manual therapy for the neck and upper back to relieve referred tension

  • Acupuncture to reduce muscle tightness and pain

  • Postural correction and home-care exercises to prevent symptoms from returning

Since TMJ dysfunction often involves more than just the jaw, several of our services can work together to support your recovery:

  1. Chiropractic adjustments can help correct misalignments in the jaw, neck, and upper spine that contribute to TMJ strain, restoring proper joint mechanics and reducing pressure on the jaw.

  2. Massage therapy helps release tight, overworked muscles around the jaw, temples, and neck, easing tension and improving circulation to support healing.

  3. Acupuncture can calm overactive jaw muscles, reduce pain signals, and support relaxation, making it a helpful complement to hands-on treatment.
